Magnitude-6 quake rattles us

A magnitude-6 earthquake (Japanese scale) hit Chiba on Saturday, July 23, but there were few injuries and not much damage. Drew, Piko and I ran out the front door and watched utility poles, cement walls and everything else sway. Pat and Lauren were in Nagano for a traditional dance workshop.

Gary and Pat get Meteoraized

I listen to Linkin Park quite a bit from time to time but didn't really consider trying to see them live. We haven't gone to many concerts for a while so this wasn't even on the radar screen. But Pat found that there were tickets available for Linkin Park, playing at Nippon Budokan on October 27. So she phoned me and asked if I wanted to go, and I said OK.

Our trip to Nikko

We hadn't been doing much traveling within Japan for quite a while so we were thinking about a short summer or fall trip. Especially, we haven't traveled very far here with the kids. When Kiki said she was coming over for a visit, it was one more incentive, so Pat got to work planning an excursion. We decided on Nikko because it isn't too far away, is very nice — loaded with cultural and natural beauty — and it's been quite a while since we were there last.

Kiki visits, kids take part in Yotsukaido celebration

Pat's sister Kiki (aka Donna) emailed us that she had some free time and frequent flier miles, so she was going to pay us a visit. She came at a good time because there were both kids' birthdays, the Yotsukaido Furusato Omatsuri (summer festival), and other fun things in store.

Kids in national meet

On Saturday, August 9, Lauren and Drew participated in the Shorinji Kempo Zenkoku Taikai held at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Both had been practicing daily, trying to be at their best for the national meet. We knew that the experience would be great no matter what their scores were, and that, even if they didn't receive a medal, the improvements achieved by the intensive practices alone would make the whole thing worthwhile. As it turned out, Drew did get a medal, and Lauren and her partner Sakiko-chan only missed getting one by one point.

We are Raumatized

On December 11, our new Toyota Raum arrived. Well, it's actually a few years old, but it's new to us. A friend of ours, who buys and sells cars at the dealers' auctions, had been on the lookout for a Raum for us. We choose that model because it's big enough to hold a bicycle or taiko drums, but small enough to fit in our little carport. Anyway, he found one, we did the paper work, and now it's our new ride.

Snow in Chiba

Snow came to Chiba a few weeks earlier than usual this year. We got about 13cm of wet snow. Pat drove me (and a neighbor) to Monoi station Monday morning, as I thought the ride might be a little too precarious on the bike. Meanwhile the kids and dog had lots of fun playing in the snow at home. Quite a few schools in Japan were closed for the day.

DSL finally arrives

After months of frustration due to living in a "DSL dead zone" while being constantly bombarded by DSL promotion campaigns, we finally were able to sign on when the coverage area was increased. While our download speeds are nowhere near the advertised maximums, we're happy to pay a flat rate for Internet service (at last) and to be able to have the phone and Internet connection at the same time.
